ROCHESTER, NY (WHAM) – “They let their guard down. They feel less vulnerable; they feel there’s a degree of anonymity with these online conversations,” said Bryan Boetig, who oversees the FBI’s child exploitation task force. He said, “When you work these cases online, you have no idea where you’re going to end up.”

The case against 46-year-old Charles Kane brought them to Monroe County. Kane, a music teacher for more than 20 years in the Hilton School District, is accused of trying to lure a 14-year-old girl into a sexual encounter. However, that girl Kane thought he was talking to online was actually an undercover member of this cyber task force.

The same task force charged Joseph Lamica, a babysitter and former day care worker, with child porn possession. That was days after Lamica was arrested for threats against the Churchville Chili School District two weeks ago.

And this week, Monroe County 9-1-1 dispatcher Jason Cortese was also arrested for soliciting a young girl on social media.

“Many of these people are in positions of trust. People that we trust our children with and we give them access to our children and they take advantage of that,” said Bryan.

While the FBI is watching, Bryan said one thing parents can do is simply talk to their kids. He said, “Even good parents have children that get taken advantage of, but you have to make sure that you’re constantly on top of your children, having discussions with them, and letting them know that they can report this to you.”
