PD: CT bus driver arrested with marijuana while reckless driving with teens on-board

(WTNH) – A bus driver was arrested in Naugatuck Thursday after police found marijuana on the bus when they pulled her over for reckless driving while two teens were on-board.

Police say that at around 6:05 p.m., officers responded to a report of a school bus driving recklessly by running stop signs and speeding. The bus was then seen parked at Breen Field where the caller says they observed what looked like two juveniles fighting on-board.

The caller told police that when they approached the bus, it sped away. However, the caller then followed it and called police who located the bus shortly later on Spring Street.

Once stopped, the bus driver, identified as 48-year-old Grace Mcphail, of Naugatuck, told officers that she works for the First Student Bus Services in Middlebury and that she was off-duty but was driving the bus with permission from her employer.

She also told police that she was driving fast and running stop signs because she was scared that a car was following her.

During the investigation, police say that smelled a strong odor of marijuana on the bus and then found that Mcphail was in possession of marijuana, as well as drug paraphernalia.

When asked about the marijuana, Mcphail said that the two juveniles on the bus had been smoking marijuana but that she had not been. The two juveniles were found to be teenagers under the age of 18 who were not students in transport but acquaintances of Mcphail, one of which is related.

Police also contacted the First Student Bus Services who confirmed that Mcphail is an employee but did not have permission to use the bus for personal use.

It was also determined that Mcphail was in Breen Field when the park was closed.

Mcphail was then arrested and charged with sale of a controlled substance, risk of injury to a child, possession of less than 1/2 oz cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal trespass and reckless driving. She was held on a $5,000 bond.
