Plane crashes in Wilcox Tech baseball field in Meriden, CT

Meriden Police confirmed a small plane has crashed in the Wilcox Technical High School baseball field, near Oregon Road, possibly due to an engine failure.

Police were notified around 7 p.m. on Thursday evening.

The plane hit power lines. There are over 7,000 Eversource customers without power. It is not known when power will be fully restored.

One white male in his 30s was able to walk away from the crash and one is received non-life threatening injuries. Both were taken to the hospital. The pilots had to be extracted from the plane by first responders, police said.

Police said the pilots were practicing “Touch and Go’s,” where the pilot practices taking off and landing.

Police said there were no planned events on the field that evening.

The FAA confirmed the plane was a Piper PA-28 model and that two people were on board. The FAA will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the accident.

Meriden police said it is too early to tell if school will be affected for Friday.
