Police identify Plainville plane crash victim

PLAINVILLE, Conn. (WTNH) – One person has died after an airplane crashed into a Plainville landfill on Thursday morning. 

Plainville police confirmed that the one person on board the plane died on impact. Around 2:50 p.m., officials identified the victim as 67-year-old Donald Eckberg of Burlington, Conn.

According to Plainville police, emergency crews have responded to the scene after a Rutan Defiant airplane went down at 10:24 a.m. Thursday. The Federal Aviation Authority confirmed the make and model of aircraft.

Town Manager, Robert Lee, confirms to News 8 that one person was on board when the plane crashed into the Plainville landfill on Granger Lane. Lee says it happened very close to the Robertson Airport, which is located at 62 Johnson Avenue.

Plainville police said the FAA and NTSB were notified of the fatal plane crash and will be taking over the investigation.

The area surrounding the crash will be closed to the public during their investigation.
