Police identify teen, pregnant woman killed in Shelton crash

A teen and a pregnant woman were killed in a car crash in Shelton on Sunday night. 

Police say at around 7 p.m., a Mini Cooper traveling southbound on River Road crashed into a Saturn that was traveling northbound. 

There were four occupants in the Mini Cooper and three in the Saturn. There was also a third non-contact vehicle involved in the crash, according to police. 

Two passengers in the Mini Cooper, 18-year-old Shalymar Herrera, of West Haven and 23-year-old Briana Torres-Carter, of Bridgeport, were both pronounced dead. Police say Torres-Carter was pregnant. 

The driver of the Mini Cooper, 19-year-old Lawrence Carter, of Bridgeport, is currently in critical condition at the hospital. 

Another passenger of the Mini Cooper, 19-year-old Jessie Abrams, of Bridgeport, is also in the hospital but with non-life threatening injuries. 

Police say the driver of the Saturn, 25-year-old Caitlin Kalafus, and passengers 22-year-old Carly Kalafus and 26-year-old Paul Valleau, all of Pennsylvania, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

There is no word on the cause of the crash.

Officials say that the accident is being investigated by the Shelton Police Traffic Division Reconstruction Team.

There has been no enforcement action taken at this time, according to police.

As a result of the crash, River Road between Rocky Rest Road and Murphy’s Lane was closed for a period of time. The road has since reopened.
