(WWLP) – Would you know how to escape if you were kidnapped and forced into the trunk of a car?
Last week in New Jersey, a passerby heard cries for help and found a carjacking victim trapped inside a trunk.
It’s a scary situation you probably haven’t thought much about. So, 22News gathered volunteers to see whether they could escape from inside a locked trunk.
There are actually a few ways to get out of a locked trunk if you’re trapped inside, but if you’re under distress, it might take you a while to figure it out.
All volunteers made it out on their own, but some took longer than others.
Since 2001, all vehicles are required to have an emergency release latch in the trunk. It’s important to know that these latches come in all shapes and sizes and even glow in the dark.
In 2017, a woman in Alabama successfully used the emergency latch in her own vehicle to escape from her kidnapper. Next time you go out to your car, take a look in the trunk and locate your car’s emergency release latch.
