ORTON, Mass. (WPRI) — An arson investigation is underway after students at one Wheaton College dorm woke up to fire alarms sounding.
Investigators say that fires were intentionally set in bathrooms in the second and third floor bathrooms of the McIntire Residence Hall early Sunday morning. Another fire was started around 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the garbage can in the residence hall’s laundry room.
There were no injuries, but around 100 students had to be evacuated.
“They told us they called the head of the arson investigators which is a little intimidating,” said Tristan Keller, a freshman at Wheaton College.
The State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating who set these fires. Meanwhile, the school has increased campus security and is asking students to report and suspicious activity.
“It’s very important that we are able to identify the responsible person,” said Assistant Vice President for Communications Michael Graca. “We want to hold them accountable, but we also want to be sure that our residence halls are safe
There is a $5,000 reward for information that solves the case. People can call campus police or the arson hotline.
