ATHOL, Mass. (WWLP) – An Athol man pleaded guilty on Thursday to an indictment charging him with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of a young boy in 2013.
The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office told 22News 32-year-old Christopher Vinsant pleaded guilty to killing 10-year-old Isaiah Buckner in Athol on July 10, 2013.
Buckner died from a traumatic abdominal injury that he sustained while in the care and custody of Vinsant, who according to the DA’s Office, failed to get medical care for him. Prosecutors alleged that Vinsant had beaten Buckner.
Vinsant was held without the right to bail on a first-degree murder charge and pleaded not guilty in 2017 during his arraignment at Hampshire Superior Court in Northampton. He was later indicted by a Franklin County jury.
“This was a day when the victim and his family received some degree of justice,” said Assistant District Attorney Linda Pisano, the Chief of the Child Abuse Unit for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
A superior court judge imposed a prison sentence of 8-10 years in prison.
