Be on the lookout for apartment schemes

Police are warning you to be careful when looking for an apartment online.

The Westfield Police Department has been alerting people about apartment schemes, where ads are posted for apartments that don’t exist, to get you to send them a down-payment.

The schemers are often outside of the country, which makes it all but impossible to find and prosecute them or get your money back.

One Northampton woman told 22News it almost happened to her.

“When I was looking for the place I live in now, there was one scam that tried to get me to give them money, and gave me a fake address,” said Eleanor Finley.

The Westfield police said you should never send money for an apartment without first doing a walkthrough in person.

And ads posted with a phone number that isn’t local should raise a red flag.
