Chicopee shooting reminding some residents of 2012 incident

Crime

Gun shots rang out on Center Street in Chicopee on Monday evening.

“I heard some gun shots and it was just crazy,” said Luis Miranda, who lives on Center Street.

Chicopee Police officer Mike Wilk told 22News three suspects fled from a home invasion on Plante Circle, and were chased a short distance by officers. That’s when one suspect was shot by an officer on Center Street, just about a block away, according to Wilk.

People living in the neighborhood said it was a scary situation.

“I live in that neighborhood and there’s a lot of kids there. A lot,” said Millie Rivera of Chicopee. “I have three little kids living at our house so it’s very concerning.”

Another man who lives in the area told 22News this reminded him of a 2012 incident at a home on nearby West Street.

“I was going to get milk in the morning and the cops had the street blocked off,” Manuel Lopes remembers about the day in April of 2012. “The officers had their guns drawn down the street.”

Carlos Laguer invaded a home on West Street and tried to shoot a woman who had a restraining order against him. A state trooper and a woman at a nearby gas station were wounded during the shootout. Laguer died in the house of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“The world is getting scary,” said Lopes.
