A hearing is scheduled Wednesday morning in Hampden County Superior Court in the case of Gary Schara, the man accused of murdering Agawam schoolteacher Lisa Ziegert back in 1992.

Wednesday, Schara is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing, which is where both the prosecution and defense meet in court to resolve some legal issues before trial. Hampden County DA spokesperson Jim Leydon told 22News it isn’t clear whether Schara himself will be in court for today’s hearing.

Schara was arrested in 2017; 25 years after the murder of Ziegert, who was abducted from a card shop where she worked a second job. Her body was found about four miles away, in a wooded area off Suffield Street.

District Attorney Anthony Gulluni says that DNA phenotyping helped determine that Schara was their suspect, though he had been a person of interest in the case dating all the way back to 1993.
