(CNN) – A California man is in custody, accused of driving his truck onto a crowded sidewalk and hitting nine people.
Police in Fullerton say 22-year-old Christopher Solis is suspected of being on drugs when he hit the pedestrians and then crashed into a tree.
Several people were trapped under the truck. Officers and people nearby lifted the truck to free the victims.
Police say nine people ranging in age from 18-years-old to 49 were sent to the hospital.
“Upon arrival, we found that nine pedestrians had been struck by a vehicle in a fairly chaotic scene with hundreds of people around in the area, due to the bar closing time,” said Fullerton Police Lt. John Radus.
“Our officers were able to remove at least two or three of those individuals that were stuck underneath the vehicle and they received treatment,” said Radus. “Those nine individuals that were struck by the vehicles, excuse me by the vehicle, were transported to a local trauma center with injuries ranging from moderate to serious.”
The driver was arrested for felony DUI causing great bodily harm.
Police are asking anyone with cellphone video of the incident to turn it in to help with their investigation.
