East Longmeadow man facing federal charges in connection with alleged weed trafficking


An East Longmeadow man is facing federal criminal charges after an alleged marijuana trafficking in various locations. 

The Department of Justice told 22News 33-year-old John Americo Pereira was arrested on Friday and charged in Springfield federal court with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. He was ordered detained pending a detention hearing. 

Court documents allege that investigators have been looking into Pereira and others for marijuana distribution since January 2018. 

A search warrant executed on Friday, February 8, at Pereira’s home led officers to discover about $688,000 in a safe and 260 pounds of marijuana. 

Authorities also found more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana after executing an additional search warrant at locations in East Longmeadow, Springfield, and Ellington, Connecticut. 

If convicted, Pereira could face no more than 20 years in prison, a minimum of three years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a fine of $1 million.
