HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A Holyoke High School student was arrested for heroin possession Friday morning before school.

In a letter to parents, Executive Principal Stephen Mahoney said the student was observed acting suspiciously on the edge of the school property, between Holyoke High School North and McKenzie Field. Mahoney said he and another staff member discovered the heroin when they went to check on the student.

The student was taken into custody by Holyoke police and will be disciplined according to Holyoke Public Schools’ Code of Conduct.

“Although your student may not be aware that this situation occurred, it was important to us to notify families of our actions at Holyoke High School,” Mahoney said. “Please know that we will always put student safety first and work collaboratively with families and police to ensure a supportive learning environment.”

Dear Holyoke High School Families,

Prior to the start of school this morning, a student was observed acting suspiciously on the edge of the property between Holyoke High School North and McKenzie Field.  An alert staff member notified me and upon investigation we discovered heroin. We immediately engaged our school resource officer and the Holyoke Police Department.  The student was promptly arrested and will also face discipline according to the Holyoke Public Schools’ Code of Conduct.

Although your student may not be aware that this situation occurred, it was important to us to notify families of our actions at Holyoke High School.  Please know that we will always put student safety first and work collaboratively with families and police to ensure a supportive learning environment.  We appreciate the prompt attention that staff and the Holyoke Police Department have given the situation.

We strive to communicate openly with you while maintaining student confidentiality.  If you have any further questions or concerns, we ask that you contact the Holyoke Police Department.

Sincerely,

Stephen Mahoney
