Incidents leading to Hatfield bank robbery suspect’s arrest shocking to residents

Crime

Hatfield residents were shocked to hear of a bank robbery on the morning of Christmas Eve.

State Police arrested 30-year-old Michael Taylor, after a highway pursuit that started in Northampton and ended with a foot-chase after the getaway car was abandoned on I-91 in Holyoke.

Taylor is accused of robbing the People’s United Bank branch in Hatfield Monday morning.

Police said they arrested Taylor after he fell from a tree he was hiding in near the Connecticut River in Holyoke.

Police recovered a canvas sack and the cash believed to have been stolen in the bank robbery.

Hatfield residents were surprised to hear this type of crime took place in their town.

“It’s very uncommon,” Zane Wendolowski told 22News. “Hatfield is obviously a very small town and most people there are friendly and most times there’s nothing like that.”

Hatfield resident Owen Whidden said the news was unexpected, “There’s not much crime that really happens in Hatfield. It kind of surprised me.”

Taylor has been charged with armed robbery and resisting arrest.
