UPDATE // West Springfield Police: Man commits 2 attempted carjackings, home invasions while armed

A man was arrested in West Springfield after an attempted break-in at a home on Ohio Avenue.

A scary and confusing morning for residents on Ohio Avenue in West Springfield Sunday.

West Springfield and State Police were called to the area just after 10 Sunday morning for an initial report of an active shooter. 22News saw officers speaking with neighbors and police dogs searching for evidence.

“We’ve lived here for 15 years and we’ve never seen any cops down here or never real action,” said Antonio DeMaio.

West Springfield Police Captain Paul Conner told 22News a man was arrested at 80 Ohio Avenue, after running down the street from a nearby home where an attempted robbery occurred.

Capt. Conner said one person suffered a minor head injury, but didn’t need to be taken to the hospital.

The situation on Ohio Avenue Sunday morning required a heavy police presence. West Springfield and State Police were here investigating.

Neighbors told 22News this is a quiet neighborhood and they can’t believe something like this happened here.

“Everybody knows everybody else by a first name basis,” said Tony Cignoli. “So right away we started calling each other to find out what was happening. But really shocked and surprised. It’s so quiet here.”

Capt. Connor told 22News police did recover a gun but are trying to determine whether someone fired it.

Ohio Avenue was blocked off on both sides, while police investigated.

22News is continuing to cover this story, we’ll bring you new information as soon as it becomes available.
