(NBC News) Illinois police arrested the parents of 5-year-old A.J. Freund Wednesday on murder charges, six days after the couple reported the boy missing.
The arrests came following the discovery of A.J.’s body in a shallow grave not far from his Crystal Lake home.
Police say they were led to the spot after confronting A.J.’s parents with forensic cell phone data.
Prior to their arrest, mother JoAnn Cunningham and father Andrew Freund Sr., had been investigated by the Department of Children and Family Services.
Neighbors say the family, including A.J.’s younger brother, lived in squalor, with trash and animal waste throughout their home.
“Everybody has been concerned and let the authorities know that over the last year,” said neighbor Janelle Butler.
