Murder, rape, kidnapping: Stewart Weldon indicted on 52 charges

Stewart Weldon has been indicted on dozens of charges, nearly three months after police found the remains of three women at his home on Page Boulevard.

Weldon is facing a total of 52 charges, including murder, aggravated rape, and kidnapping.

The 52-count indictment is the result of alleged crimes involving 11 different victims over a year’s time.

The Springfield Police Department released a statement Friday morning:

“The Springfield Police Department’s Major Crimes Captain Trent Duda and his Homicide Unit thoroughly investigated these cases. They presented the Grand Jury with an unprecedented amount of evidence, almost 400 articles in total. We hope these indictments are the next step in bringing justice to these three homicide victims, their families, as well as the eight victims who came forward after Springfield police officers arrested Mr. Weldon in May.”

This all began on May 27 when Weldon allegedly refused to pull over for police and led them on a brief chase. Once he was stopped, his woman passenger told police she was being beaten and held against her will.

Weldon was then arrested on kidnapping charges and held on $2 million bail. It wasn’t until three days after his arrest that police found the bodies of 47-year-old Ernestine Ryans, 34-year-old America Lyden, and 27-year-old Kayla Escalante inside his Page Boulevard home.

The 22News I-Team learned Weldon was arrested 16 different times by Springfield police and was charged with 68 offenses from 2002 until his arrest on May 27.

One woman told 22News she used to see Weldon at the Dollar General Store in Springfield’s South End.

“I freaked out I never thought a man like this would do something like this,” said Carmen of Springfield. “He never looked like the kind, but I guess they don’t look like the kind right?”

If convicted of first-degree murder, Weldon faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The district attorney has not yet revealed when Weldon will be arraigned on the murder indictments.

The 52 charges are broken down below:

  • 3 counts of murder
  • 8 counts of strangulation
  • 9 counts of aggravated rape
  • 2 counts of rape
  • 5 counts of aggravated kidnapping
  • 4 counts of kidnapping
  • 2 counts of assault to rape
