A Ware man has been arrested and charged with the murders of a West Brookfield woman and her three young children.
On Wednesday, the Worcester County DA’s Office announced the arrest of 32-year-old Matthew Locke, who’s been locked up for months on charges he misled police in the murder investigation.
Moses Bermudez’s wife Sara, and their three children, ranging in age from two to eight, were stabbed to death in their West Brookfield home in March.
In West Brookfield, people said they’ve been on edge as the investigation dragged on.
“Put it this way, we haven’t been out, this is the first time walking,” said Donna Dubour. “Especially coming out of the place at night, you know, because I’m all by myself. It was scary. I feel safer now.”
According to court documents, Locke, a Ware resident, was linked to the crimes by DNA found on the body of one of the child victims.
22News went to the Eddy Street home, where Locke lived in Ware, but no one came to the door. One neighbor said it frightened him to know someone like that was living just a few houses away.
“It scares me because I’ve got four kids myself, some of them around the age of the kids who were murdered in West Brookfield,” said Kenneth Blake of Ware. “It’s definitely a little scary knowing it was that close.”
The family was found stabbed to death in their home, and the house had been set on fire. The DA said Wednesday they are no longer looking at Moses Bermudez as a suspect, but that came as a small consolation.
Locke is currently being held without bail. He’s scheduled to return to court in October.
