NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – New Haven police are actively searching for two kidnapping suspects after they stole a mother’s minivan with her 4-year-old son still inside early Saturday morning.

According to New Haven police, at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, a grey Honda minivan was stolen from in front of a bodega on State Street between Rock and May streets.

Upon arrival, officers found a 31-year-old woman, who told officers that her 4-year-old son was inside the car when the thieves took off with it. The woman said she had gone into the Bodega to buy snacks for her son, and was not gone long. When she went back outside, her minivan and son were gone.

A witness saw a white Honda Civic pull up to meet the minivan in a gas station lot nearby. The witness said the driver was a black woman, and there were several people in the car with her. Several people got out of the Civic and got into the minivan before speeding away south on State Street towards Willow Street.

New Haven officers notified Connecticut State Police as well as neighboring police departments for help searching for the minivan. One New Haven officer was near Rock and Ridge Streets when a man waved him down. Next to the man was the 4-year-old boy that had been in the stolen minivan. He was wearing only a t-shirt, shorts, and a winter hat.

The officer gave the boy the coat from his uniform, and the boy was reunited with his mother a short time later. EMTs brought the mother and son to the hospital for a precautionary check-up.

As the mother and son were being reunited, officers discovered that the victim’s cellphone was still on, which allowed them to narrow down the minivan’s location. It was in Hamden.

At 4:00 a.m., Hamden officers responded and reported that the stolen minivan had been abandoned on Woodstock Road. The victim’s cellphone and keys were found nearby.

Surveillance photos were obtained by New Haven officers that show the car thieves as well as the car that met up with them in the gas station lot. If you recognize any of the people or vehicles in these photos, you’re asked to call New Haven Police at 203-946-6316.
