Not guilty plea for West Springfield police captain accused of stealing money

Crime

A West Springfield police captain accused of stealing money from the police department’s evidence room pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Hampden County Superior Court Thursday.

A Hampden County Grand Jury indicted 50-year-old Daniel Spaulding earlier this month on the charge of using his official position to obtain unwarranted privilege.

Spaulding was released on personal recognizance with conditions that include giving up his passport and firearms.

The police captain has been on administrative leave since 2017. He allegedly took more than $1,000 dollars rom the West Springfield Police department evidence room between May 2016 and 2017.

Officials say Spaulding later replaced all of the stolen cash and returned the evidence bags in May 2017.

Spaulding is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on September 10.
