Orange home invasion murder suspects to appear in Orange District Court

ORANGE, Mass. (WWLP) – Two suspects in the deadly home invasion in Orange, who were arrested in Virginia, are now back in Massachusetts.

23-year-old Joshua Hart and 27-year-old Brittany Smith, both of Athol, are suspected of murdering 95-year-old Thomas Harty and seriously wounding his wife, Joanna Fisher, in last week’s home invasion in Orange.

“It’s awful that it happened in this town i cant even believe it happens anywhere,” said Debra Hahn of Orange. “Its a horrible thing to do to two old people who cant even defend themselves. It’s just awful.”

Northwestern District Attorney spokeswoman Mary Carey told 22News that Hart and Smith were captured outside a Walmart in Virginia last weekend. The victim’s stolen car was also recovered in Virginia.

“I’m very proud of the police for the job they did finding them,” said Michelle Sampson of Orange. I’m really glad that it may be all taken care of hopefully soon.”

Hart and Smith were brought back to Orange Wednesday night after waiving extradition in a Virginia Courtroom this week. The two suspects will now stand before a judge at Orange District Court for their next arraignment scheduled for Friday morning at 11:30.

“Justice should be served. Nobody should get away with that especially being the elderly that’s so wrong,” said Ernest Cumberbatch of New Salem.

Hart and Smith will be arraigned on charges of murder, attempted murder, and robbery Friday.
