Orange woman arrested, accused of stealing more than $69K in Social Security benefits

A woman from Orange was arrested and arraigned Monday in Springfield Federal Court after she allegedly stole thousands of dollars in Social Security benefits.

According to U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling, 49-year-old Marie Coleman is charged with one count of concealing events affecting the right to payment of Social Security benefits.

Lelling said Coleman served as the payee for someone who was getting benefits and allegedly failed to disclose that person was no longer living with her in 2008.

Coleman then allegedly continued to get payments on the person’s behalf through January 2017 and got more than $69,000 worth of benefits after the individual had stopped living with her.

She is facing up to five years in prison and three years of supervised released. Coleman could also be fined $250,000 or twice the amount she collected, whichever is greater.
