Owner of neglected Deerfield dog charged with felony

Crime

The owner of a dog who was found starved and abandoned in Deerfield last month has been charged.

According to Deerfield police, 18-year-old Timothy Rivers of Greenfield was arraigned in the towns District Court September 13 on a felony charge of animal neglect.

The dog, who is now called Tigger, has been under the care of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Regional Dog Shelter since he was rescued on August 9.

“Tigger was abandoned in near 100-degree heat near Hillside Road in Deerfield,” police wrote on Facebook. “Tigger was in poor health, starving, covered with flees, and nearly scratched off all his rear end hair and skin.”

He’s now back to a healthy weight and will soon be looking for a new home. According to Deerfield police, Tigger will remain in the care of the regional animal shelter while Rivers goes through the justice process.

The Town of Deerfield foot the bill for Tigger’s initial exam back in August. Since then, Deerfield police say the costs associated with his care have been extensive. Anyone wishing to donate to Tigger’s medical bills can send a check to:
