A New York man is in custody after police say he was driving a stolen car Wednesday morning.

Whately Police told 22News they received a call to investigate a suspicious person in the parking lot of the Circle K on Sunderland Road around 8:15 p.m.

The man was allegedly throwing items into a dumpster from a vehicle that was registered to an individual in Greenfield. The New York man, who according to police did not have a valid driver’s license, claimed to have recently purchased the car but was unable to provide the proper paperwork to show ownership.

Whately Police contacted Greenfield Police to locate the registered owner of the vehicle in order to verify the man’s story. While on the phone with Greenfield Police, the registered owner of the car called 911 to report their vehicle missing.

After further investigation, Whatley Police arrested the New York man and charged him with receiving stolen property.

The man was processed and taken to Greenfield District Court to await arraignment.
