Springfield man accused of attempted shoplifting arrested

Police arrested a Springfield man after he allegedly tried to leave Walmart without paying for over $40 in food on Thursday. 

Chicopee Police spokesman Mike Wilk told 22News 30-year-old Ali Ellkhatib is facing charges including shoplifting, public assistance fraud, and identity fraud.

Wilk said police were called to the Walmart on Memorial Drive for a report of a shoplifter being held by loss prevention around 1:20 p.m. that Thursday. A loss prevention officers told police they saw Ellkhatib attempt to leave with the items without paying. They watched him use an EBT card for some items at self-checkout.  

Ellkhatib told officers he didn’t have any ID when questioned. That was when officers searched him and found an EBT card belonging to someone, who Ellkhatib said was his “cousin.” 

Officers finally found Ellkhatib’s actual ID and arrested him.
