A Springfield man was charged in federal court on Thursday for failing to register as a sex offender.

The Department of Justice told 22News 48-year-old Ruben Pagan was charged with one count of failing to register as a sex offender. He is currently in state custody on unrelated charges.

Court documents allege that Pagan, who was already convicted of a sex offense, traveled to another state and failed to register as a sex offender between October 2017 and March 2018.

It is required by law to register as a sex offender once convicted.

Pagan could spend no more than 10 years in prison, a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of $250,000.
