Springfield man charged with breaking into cars

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield police arrested car break-in suspect early Friday morning after multiple cars were targeted in the area of Stearns Square.

Springfield Police Department spokesman Ryan Walsh told 22News, 23-year-old Cristian Mercado tried to break into a locked car before moving on to another car near Stearns Square and smashing its window open.

Walsh said he was taken into custody around 1:00 a.m with a cell phone in his possession from an earlier break-in. 

Mercado has been charged with felony breaking and entering into a vehicle at night, felony attempted breaking and entering into a vehicle at night, receiving stolen property less than $1,200 and possession of burglarious instrument.
