Springfield PD: 36 cell phones, stolen firearm, jewelry recovered during traffic stop

Crime

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An 18-year-old man and a juvenile were arrested Monday night after Springfield police allegedly recovered dozens of stolen cell phones, jewelry and a firearm during a traffic stop on Kenyon Street.

Springfield Police Department spokesman Ryan Walsh told 22News the traffic stop was made after officers observed the car idling and parked facing the wrong way on the street.

The driver, 18-year-old Giovanni Padilla, was asked to step out of the car after officers allegedly observed marijuana and a digital scale on the center console. Walsh said he was then advised he was being arrested for operating a vehicle without a license.

“Mr. Padilla refused and ultimately began kicking Officer Basovskiy several times, while attempting to reach into the back seat of the car,” Walsh said. “When officers were able to get Mr. Padilla out of the car, a struggle ensued as he continued to attack and strike officers with his legs and arms.”

Padilla was eventually put into the back of a cruiser with the help of additional officers. Walsh said his juvenile passenger was detained without incident.

Walsh said a firearm reported stolen out of Holyoke was found in the suspects’ car. Thirty-six cell phones, cell phone parts and tools for disassembly, and bags of jewelry were also allegedly found in the car. Walsh said at the same time a victim attempting to locate their stolen cell phone arrived, using an app to track her phone.
