Springfield police officer struck by alleged drunk driver who crashed into ambulance


SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Springfield police officer was injured when an alleged drunk driver crashed into the back of an ambulance on Nottingham Street Sunday night.

Springfield Police Department spokesman Ryan Walsh told 22News the officer was standing near the back of the ambulance at the time of the crash, while EMTs were helping a patient inside the ambulance.

The driver, 30-year-old Rena Gomez, is now facing multiple charges including OUI liquor, speeding, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and obstructing an emergency vehicle.

The police officer was taken to the hospital with injuries to his legs, but Walsh said he is going to be okay. Gomez was also taken to the hospital for possible injuries.
