Stewart Weldon’s criminal records with Springfield police released

Crime

The Springfield Police Department has released current and previous arrest records on kidnapping suspect Stewart Weldon.

According to police spokesman Ryan Walsh, more victims have come forward since Weldon’s arrest.

The 40-year-old Springfield resident was taken into police custody after he allegedly held a woman against her will for a month at a Springfield home. Weldon’s address is listed as 1333 Page Boulevard, the same address where three women bodies were found.

Weldon was arrested 16 different times by Springfield police and was charged with 68 offenses from 2002 through his arrest on May 27, 2017. Authorities in Springfield also filed eight additional criminal complaints against Weldon.

Weldon was arrested in October 2017. Multiple officers had to use their fists, a stun gun, and batons to arrest Weldon after they pulled him over in connection with an assault. During his arraignment for the assault incident, his bail was set at $2,500. A bail review was sought by Weldon and his council, which was heard in Superior Court in November 2017.

After the hearing, a judge decided to reduce bail to $1,000 cash, along with the condition of GPS monitoring and home confinement. Weldon cut off his GPS monitoring device in February, alleging it got wet. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

When officers went to execute the search warrant at 1333 Page Boulevard, Weldon allegedly wouldn’t unlock the door. When his girlfriend unlocked the door Weldon escaped through the back door, police say. Weldon ran into traffic, causing a vehicle to swerve. Springfield officers avoided an accident and went up on the curb, popping two tires. Officers chased Weldon on foot but were unsuccessful in catching him, according to Walsh.

Officers returned to 1333 Page Boulevard on March 8 and were unable to located Weldon.

Other than Weldon cutting off his GPS bracelet, Walsh said there was no indication from neighbors, victims or family members that Weldon and this address needed to be investigated.

Springfield officers returned to 1333 Page Blvd. two and a half days after his arrest on May 27. Walsh said when officers initially arrested Weldon that Sunday, it was addressed as a domestic situation.

When officers found the victim in Weldon’s car on May 27, she told them she was being held against her will in a home they shared, Walsh said. According to Walsh, the victim at no point ever indicated to anyone that anyone else lived at the home or that there was any need to go back to the address immediately.

Due to the condition the victim was found in, Springfield police told 22News they were unable to speak to her again after the discovery of the bodies at 1333 Page Blvd.

From January 2013 to May 27, 2018, there were 3,333 missing person reports filed on record with the Springfield Police Department, many of which were duplicates. Walsh made it clear that the number does not reflect the number of people currently missing.

As of now, there are 34 open missing person cases filed in Springfield, including 27 from this year alone.

Weldon has been arrested in Westfield and New Jersey, dating back to the 1990’s.
