Traffic stop turns into weapons arrests in Hartford

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – A routine traffic stop turned into two men being arrested on multiple weapons-related charges Friday night.

According to Hartford police, officers were conducting routine patrols in the north end of the city around 9:50 p.m., when they saw a car run through a stop sign. Police stopped the vehicle, and in the course of the stop, officers found the driver and passenger both in possession of guns, one of which was reported stolen.

Police also recovered some marijuana in the vehicle. A minor was in the car at the time of the traffic stop.

Officers arrested the driver, 19-year-old Shawn Slappy, of Hartford, as well as the passenger, 18-year-old Josephy Ray, also of Hartford. Both men were charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, weapons in a motor vehicle, and risk of injury to a minor.

In addition, Slappy was charged with theft of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and multiple motor vehicle charges. Ray was also charged with possession of a high capacity magazine.
