Two men accused of assaulting UMass students arrested, police seeking third suspect

Two men accused of assaulting UMass Amherst students on campus during an attempted drug transaction and showing a gun Wednesday afternoon have been arrested.

UMass Police told 22News the two suspects were taken into custody and arraigned in Belchertown District Court on Thursday. Police say they are still looking for a lone third suspect and the incident is still being investigated.

The identity of the two men arrested have not been released.

Multiple UMass Police officers were called to the third floor of Dwight Hall for a physical altercation around 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday and were unable to locate any persons involved.

A witness later called UMass Police and provided additional details, which led officers to a specific dorm room in Dwight Hall. That was when the officers determined that two UMass students had been assaulted following an attempted drug transaction involving marijuana.

Further investigation revealed that the initial altercation had taken place inside Dwight Hall, which then continued into the parking lot where a gun was allegedly shown by the two men. UMass Police said the men left the area in a red car.

The two UMass students involved did not need medical attention following the incident. According to campus police, one of the students assaulted knows the suspects and is cooperating with police, who are following multiple leads including surveillance video.

Please call UMass Police at (413) 545-2121, if you have any information on the third suspect.
