A UMass student has been charged with assaulting ambulance personnel and a police officer after an incident last weekend.
Hadley Police told 22News an officer was called to assist Amherst paramedics who were bringing a “combative patient” to the hospital.
Police said the 21-year-old man had to be handcuffed to the stretcher and placed under arrest after he struck paramedics and the officer.
“That is absolutely shocking to me that someone would attack the ambulance service or the police,” said Gene Jiles of Amherst. “For the most part, this town has been pretty much quiet. I’ve never heard of anything escalating to violence from students towards anybody else.”
The Hadley Police Department said the officer involved was not seriously hurt.
