SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The verdict was announced Wednesday for a Springfield police officer charged in connection to a fight outside Nathan Bill’s Bar and Restaurant back in 2015.

Jose Diaz has waived his right to a trial by jury and was found guilty of misleading investigators in Nathan Bill’s case. He was acquitted in May 2022 of five felony counts. The judge citing no prior record as a decision as to why Diaz was able to leave the courtroom, he’ll be back in court for sentencing on Monday morning.

“He has no other record, he certainly presents no flight risk judge and even at the pretrial hearing where we attempted a plea, the government went with probation,” said Defense Attorney Jeremy Powers.

Two officers were acquitted and two others, Daniel Billingsley and Christian Cicero, were found guilty of assault and battery charges. Both have been reinstated by the Springfield Board of Police Commissioners.

In response to this new verdict for Diaz, Springfield Police Spokesperson Ryan Walsh told 22News any disciplinary measures will be handled by that commission, adding Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood will refrain from commenting “until all the cases have been adjudicated.”

“We are pleased to deliver a measure of justice and accountability in this hard-fought case and thank the judge for his careful consideration of the evidence,” said Chloe Gotsis, spokeswoman for Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. “The details of this painful case were further complicated by the defendant’s misleading statements, and we are grateful that the court has agreed to hold the defendant responsible with a guilty verdict today.”
