Victim of shooting on Cooley Street in Springfield identified, suspect arrested


Officials have identified the man who was killed in Saturday’s shooting at the Five Town Plaza on Cooley Street. 

According to the Hampden County DA Spokesperson James Leydon, 29-year-old Alexis Martinez, of Springfield, was found dead in the parking lot near 380 Cooley Street.

Springfield police the man accused of Martinez shooting Martinez was arrested Monday night. 

According to Springfield Police Spokesperson Ryan Walsh, an arrest warrant was issued for 30-year-old Karl Exantus hours after the incident on Cooley Street Saturday.

Walsh said Exantus turned himself in Monday night at 10 p.m. at the Springfield Police Department.

Exantus is charged with murder, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

The incident took place Saturday when police found a man dead in the driver’s seat of a car after they were called to the Five Town Plaza Saturday afternoon for a report of a gunshot victim.
