EAST BROOKFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An arrest has been made in the murders of a mother and her three children in West Brookfield.
Worcester County DA Joseph Early Jr. announced during a news conference Wednesday afternoon that 32-year-old Matthew Locke, of Ware, has been charged in the murders of 38-year-old Sara Bermudez and her three children 8-year-old Madison, 6-year-old James and 2-year-old Michael.
Locke was ordered held without bail during his arraignment in East Brookfield District Court. His next court date is scheduled for October 18.
The family was found dead inside their West Brookfield home on March 1. All victims were found to have had suffered stab wounds.
Early attributed the charges against Locke to a thorough investigation and DNA evidence.
In July, Locke was arraigned in Worcester Superior Court on four counts of misleading law enforcement in connection with the deaths. Prosecutors say Locke told investigators Bermudez’s husband Moses implied the gang MS-13 was responsible. Police say, however, the two men didn’t see each other after the killings. Locke and Moses Bermudez are cousins.
Locke is scheduled to be arraigned on the murder charges this afternoon.
DA Early said the investigation into the murders is “very complex and remains active.”
Anyone who has information about the case or Matthew Locke is urged to call Massachusetts State Police detectives at 508-832-9124 or the West Brookfield Police Department at 508-867-1405.
