WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A West Springfield man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly drove the wrong way on I-91 while drunk, striking a state police cruiser and two other cars.
Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio told 22News the driver has been identified as 31-year-old Yevgeniy Rudenko. *Massachusetts State Police initially identified the suspect as 60-year-old Yuriy Rudenko, but sent out a correction.
The incident came to an end when Rudenko’s pickup truck rolled over on I-91 South in Longmeadow near the Springfield line.
Procopio said three people were taken to the hospital as a result of the wrong-way crashes caused by Rudenkno– a 33-year-old Florida resident, a 22-year-old Enfield, Connecticut, woman, and the trooper whose cruiser was struck.
All three suffered non life-threatening injuries, according to Procopio.
Rudenko has been charged with OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, state highway wrong way violation, possession of an open container of alcohol while driving, marked lanes violation, and speeding.
State police shut down all southbound lanes Tuesday night in response to the incident. All lanes were reopened just after midnight.
Longmeadow Firefighters and Massachusetts Department of Transportation workers also provided help to state police.
