Deadly accident on Route 291 in Springfield


SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – At approximately 2:45 a Massachusetts State Trooper was in the area of Route 291 eastbound in the area of St. James Avenue in Springfield. The trooper observed a gray 2008 Infiniti Sedan pass him at a speed of approximately 100mph.

The trooper left his post and attempted to catch up the speeding vehicle. MST Troop B headquarters authorized the trooper to pursue and assumed command and control.

Several seconds later the suspect vehicle tried to take Exit 5A. The trooper notified Troop B headquarters that the suspect was getting off the highway.

State police received a call that a vehicle had crashed near the bottom of the ramp. Troopers responding to the crash found the car on its side on the on-ramp. The operator had been ejected and suffered severe injuries. Troopers administered first aid, but the suspect was determined deceased. The suspect was not wearing a seat belt.

The suspect is identified as Denzil Bell, 23, of Springfield.

The crash remains under investigation.
