Drivers accessing I-91 and I-291 in Springfield will see more overnight closures

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) –  These overnight road and exit closures will begin at 9 each night and will be in effect until 5 the next morning. If you’re planning to travel before Friday for the holidays, this could affect your commute.

Exit 1A from I-291 West, to I-91 South, will be closed overnight from Sunday, December 17th through Thursday, December 21st. I-91 South at the I-291 interchange will also close overnight Tuesday, December 19th and reopen Wednesday, December 20th.

MassDOT has announced that signs will be displayed to guide drivers to detoured routes. There will not be any lane, ramp or road closures over the holiday weekend. Starting at noon on Friday, December 22nd until 5 in the morning on Tuesday, December 26th drivers will not see any closures.

MassDOT is advising drivers to plan for additional travel time through these areas.Signs will be in place indicating the following detour routes:For the Exit 1A Closures

  • To reach I-91 South from I-291 West/Route 20 West: Take Exit 2B on I-291 West and follow signs for Dwight Street. Turn left on Dwight Street, then turn right on State Street. Turn left on West Columbus Avenue/Hall of Fame Avenue, and bear left after crossing Union Street, to merge onto I-91 South.

For the I-91 South Closure

  • To continue to I-91 South: Take Exit 8 towards I-291 East/Route 20 East. Take Exit 2 towards Chestnut Street. Merge onto Chestnut Street and keep right. Turn right onto Liberty Street and then turn left onto Main Street. Turn right on State Street and then turn left on West Columbus Avenue/Hall of Fame Avenue. Bear left after crossing Union Street, to merge onto I-91 South.
  • For downtown destinations: Take Exit 8 towards I-291 East/Route 20 East. Take Exit 2 towards Chestnut Street. Merge onto Chestnut Street and keep right. Turn right onto Liberty Street and then turn left onto Main Street.
