Road work on two highway bridges in Springfield has been causing backups on I-91.
As work continues on the Interstate 91 bridges over Union and Broad Streets, the on-ramp on West Columbus Ave remains closed, and traffic is squeezed down to two lanes on the elevated section of I-91.
Drivers told 22News the highway gets backed up hours before the work day even begins.
“In the morning, life after 5 o’clock, it’s terrible,” Lloyd Campbell of Springfield told 22News. “You don’t have no shortcuts, you just have to stay in line, be patient.”
MassDOT engineer Richard Masse told 22News that paving and adding lines on the Broad and Union Street bridges is ongoing, but the project is on track to be finished by June 30.
Masse said most of the work that remains of the I-91 rehabilitation project, including painting and making repairs, will take place underneath the highway.
Masse also said the overall I-91 project is set to be totally complete by February of 2019, but full beneficial use of the highway will be achieved well before that.
