After 7 years in making, MGM Springfield officially opens Friday

It’s been seven years in the making, and Friday morning MGM Springfield will open their doors to the public.

MGM Springfield broke ground on the project back in 2015, and we’ve been watching the casino take shape ever since.

The casino will have several elements from the hotel and casino, to the movie theater, bowling alley, restaurants and many places to shop.

All of the restaurants will provide a variety of food options to people at the casino. They also incorporated the history of downtown Springfield into the design of the casino.

Final touches were still being made at MGM Springfield early Thursday evening.

A news conference was held inside MGM Springfield about what to expect once they open their doors Friday.

The Blue Man Group performed at the beginning of the news conference. Several cities and state leaders, as well as MGM officials, attended the news conference.

22News got a chance to speak with MGM Resorts International CEO James Murren after the conference. He told 22News why MGM chose to put the casino downtown Springfield.

“We just naturally gravitated towards Springfield,” said Murren. “And the reason was really born out of the people I met here. The resiliency of the people, you know the feeling that they really needed a break. You know Boston was doing great, even then and especially now, but this a great American city.”

Murren said he thinks the casino will have a positive impact on the city. MGM Springfield opens its doors Friday morning at 11.
