MGM Springfield said 150,000 people visited the new casino during its opening weekend, and nearby businesses benefited from all that foot traffic.
Red Rose Pizzeria, a south end staple located right next to the casino, said they had to increase staffing ahead of the grand opening.
They said in addition to their regular customers, Red Rose is becoming a destination for new visitors from out of town.
The restaurant said traffic hasn’t been a problem, making it easy for customers to come in.
“I’ve definitely had to increase staff,” Rita Caputo-Capua of Red Rose Pizzeria told 22News. “Because during the day, when it wasn’t so busy, now I’m noticing from two to four when we use to have a little bit of a lull, now we’re full. I just want the customers to know not to be concerned about the traffic down here, it really has not been bad at all.”
Major upcoming events, like Stevie Wonder’s performance this weekend, are expected to continue to attract big crowds to downtown Springfield.
