Springfield native Ruth Carter wins Oscar for costume design in ‘Black Panther’


A western Massachusetts woman brought home an academy award Sunday night! 

58-year-old Ruth Carter, who is a Springfield native won her first Oscar Sunday night for her costume design in the movie “Black Panther”. She won it during the 91st Oscars telecast from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Carter is the first African-American to win an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. She has designed costumes for films like “Malcolm X” and “Selma”. 

Carter had been nominated twice before.
