(WWLP) – A woman from Springfield won her first ever Academy Award.
Ruth Carter attended high school at the former Technical High School, which is now the Springfield Data Center.
On Sunday night she became the first African American woman to win an Academy Award in the Best Costume Design category.
The 58-year-old won her first Oscar for her work in the movie Black Panther.
The movie was nominated for seven Oscars, including the first nomination for a superhero film in the best picture category. Black Panther won three awards Sunday night.
At the end of her acceptance speech, Carter dedicated the award to her mother, who was watching the Academy Awards from her home in western Massachusetts.
Carter has been nominated twice before for her work in Malcolm X and Amistad.
