A Thursday night comedy about a bar and its quirky clientele may sound familiar.
Tonight, a new “outdoor” variation debuts with “Abby’s.”
Natalie Morales plays the title character, the owner of a highly illegal bar in the backyard of the home she rents.
“If I can be compared to Ted Danson in any way, I’ll take it,” she says. “And if our show’s compared to ‘Cheers,’ we’ll take it too.”
That classic was set in Boston. “Abby’s” is set in San Diego, and filmed outdoors in a back lot neighborhood at Universal Studios.
“In the backyard of one of those houses, we built a bar set and a whole seating arrangement for the audience and we brought everybody in and it was really awesome,” Morales says.
Even if the setting’s unique, Morales hopes “Abby’s” vibe is familiar.
“I think it’s going to feel like you’re hanging out with your friends,” she says. “I think you’re going to want to make your very own Abby’s in your backyard. And have your friends come over and maybe charge them.”
