SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield police have arrested a man on murder charges, for allegedly stabbing a high school senior to death Wednesday afternoon inside her East Springfield home.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, Nickolas T. Lacrosse, 20, of Springfield was arrested Wednesday night for the murder of 17 year-old Kathryn Mauke.

Delaney says that hours earlier, at around 3:00 P.M., police were called to 136 Prentice Street to assist an ambulance. Inside the home, police found Mauke, who had been suffering from stab wounds. She had no vital signs, and police determined that she had died.

Delaney says investigators talked to Mauke’s family and developed a lead on a suspect, Lacrosse; her ex-boyfriend. Police traveled to Lacrosse’s Observer Street home, and placed him under arrest after they questioned him. He was held overnight in lockup.

Lacrosse was arraigned on the murder charge Thursday afternoon in Springfield District Court. Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni was at the arraignment on behalf of the prosecution. Lacrosse was ordered held without the right to bail.

The young victim appeared to have had a bright future ahead of her. Mauke was a student at SABIS International Charter School in Springfield, and last month had won a four-year scholarship to American International College for being named top delegate at the 75th Annual Model Congress. She had won second place in Model Congress the year before.

Delaney says that the entire department has tremendous sympathy for the victim’s family.

“Commissioner Barbieri stated that the entire police department’s heart goes out to Kathryn Mauke’s family and friends. This is a tragic and senseless loss of a young high school student who was just starting her life,” Delaney wrote on the department’s official Facebook page.

Mauke’s death marks the city’s third homicide of 2015.

Another court hearing for Lacrosse has been scheduled for March 12.
