SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Dakin Humane Society will spay and neuter feral cats for free Wednesday morning!

People can bring feral cats to Dakin in Springfield to be spayed or neutered, as long as they use humane methods to trap the cats. The cats will also receive a free rabies vaccination.

Dakin spokesperson Lee Chambers said feral cats are also known as “community cats,” and are unowned cats who are born and live outdoors.

“With summer starting up, the breeding cycles for cats living outdoors kicks into high gear,” says Dakin’s Executive Director Carmine DiCenso.  “Their kittens live in dangerous circumstances and are vulnerable to predators, weather extremes and other hazards.  Half of them die in their first year.  This clinic is Dakin’s effort to help community cats and kittens, as well as the people who practice TNR on their behalf.”

After the surgeries, the cats will be returned to their outdoor communities.

Dakin has humane traps that can be loaned, but they require a refundable deposit and a daily fee for usage.

People who trap ferals and want to participate in the monthly clinic are required to register online in advance.  Visit this website to look up the clinic date of choice.  The next clinic is July 25.
