From politicians to children, ice cream is a good incentive

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Now that spring is here, your state legislators are using ice cream as an incentive to get work done! Legislators were able to end a marathon budget debate last month with the incentive of having ice cream sundaes after they finished.

Former Treasure Steve Grossman bonded with voters over ice cream. These days, Housing and Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash has become well-known for his love of frappes with co-workers.

Judy Herrell, owner of Herrell’s Ice Cream in Northampton, told 22News that she went to a committee meeting at the State House, where your legislators admitted to this tradition. She says that there is a reason why they may choose ice cream rather than happy hour.

“Ice cream is a sophisticated method of having a really good time, and the better the ice cream, the better the time!” Herrell said.

Ice cream chain Baskin-Robbins studied how parents use ice cream as an incentive for their kids. They found that mothers are more likely than fathers to reward their children with ice cream. But dads are more likely than moms to use ice cream as an incentive to do chores.
