Greenfield town officials and service organizations meet to discuss homeless encampment

The City of Greenfield is meeting with local social service agencies to help find the homeless temporary housing. But until that happens, nearly a dozen people continue to live on the Town Common.

There is no law that requires homeless people to take down their tents on the Town Common at any hour of the day.

Some residents say it’s horrible and embarrassing to see tents on the Town Common when you drive into the city.

But 22News also met one woman who is trying to help them.

Cynthia Dodge delivers supplies to their tents every day.

“I’ve been bringing them different supplies like sanitary supplies,” Dodge said. “People have actually donated and when out and bought different supplies and given it to me to bring up to them and hand it out.”

Mayor William Martin has told 22News there is no ordinance restricting the homeless from camping overnight on the city-owned property.

The city says they would like to find a permanent home for the homeless, especially before the colder months come.
